This book was an eye-opener for me. I've traveled a lot, especially in Europe, but it was generally the 'see as much as you can in a short space of time' type of travel that most of us do. Apart from London, where I lived for a while. I read this book to understand how the experience of 'slow travel' would differ, and how to do it. Bhavana Gesota's book is a fantastic all-in-one guide to how to achieve this. It's impossible to describe everything covered by the book. It's truly comprehensive. It starts out by breaking down the myths of how this lifestyle could be beyond you -- in the work-anywhere world we now live in, you could pack up your stuff and head off somewhere exotic while working. Or, as the author sometimes does, budget for some time off work to immerse yourself in a culture elsewhere. Think this will harm your career? That's one of the myths busted in this volume. Think you're too old, too young or not rich enough? Think again. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of the journey, making the volume a useful resource covering everything from planning where to go, how and when to book flights and accommodation, what to pack, a method to decide your must-take items, how to get information when you arrive, how to save money... everything. Need to know whether to pay with your card in local currency or your own currency? It's explained. Need a detailed packing list to check against? It's included. Want to look up a few websites to find out the latest information you need? A list of resources is included at the end of each chapter. There's a nice balance of information and personal anecdotes throughout. The anecdotes are both entertaining and enlightening -- you can learn from the author's experiences and mistakes, and in part, experience a little of her journeys with her. Looking for an apartment in Milan, for instance.Overall, a really enjoyable and informative read. I read this entire book in less than 24 hours, which tells me that I *completely* missed the point of a book that's supposed to be about slow travel! But seriously, this book is un-put-downable. Every single chapter is packed full of useful information and internet resources, equipping the would-be slow traveler with everything they need to get themselves started. Not only that, the personal anecdotes - from the author's own life as well as from the lives of the other people she has met while slow traveling - add a personal touch, and make vibrant what could easily have been a stuffy and fact-filled book. And I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this book touches on literally everything. It discusses how to financially support months or years of slow travel, which is probably the single biggest obstacle in the average person's mind. It discusses the mindset one has to cultivate in order to "travel like a local," so to speak. It even gets down into the weeds, talking about prepaid versus postpaid cellphone plans while traveling - just in case you wondered whether the author has truly thought of everything!I don't know if I'm ever going to live the kind of slow-traveling life the author speaks of, but I know that after reading this book, I at least felt like it was possible. And, to be honest, this book is so well written that simply reading it feels like visiting five or six countries!
