Scarrow keeps this outstanding series of historical novels on an even, ever-improving scale. In the first two books, he built the foundation of the military genius that propelled these two heroes -- Wellington and Bonaparte. In this, the third book, he now begins to describe their weaknesses. You begin to see Bonaparte's cruelty and narcissism. You begin to see Wellington's blossoming military self-assurance plus a darker side in his personal life. And you see the nascent threads of fate that will lead to that epochal battle -- Waterloo --in the next and final book. This is a great way to learn history, although the author confesses to a few instances of poetic license. After cleansing my literary palate by reading some modern popular mysteries, I intend to jump into the fourth book, which, if this one is any indication, will be a great one. I've read many of Scarrow's books and I enjoyed this one the most. I liked how Napoleon's and Wellington is characters evolved. Not full of blood and guts of some of his other work.
